2021 Spring Monitoring Programme Results

This year’s results demonstrated that red squirrel occupancy (the detection % out of 253 sites surveyed) has remained stable since 2015 – it is actually up and now 53% of sites. This is good news! The increase is in principally due to mild winters, abundant autumn seed crops and grey squirrel management. Nevertheless, there is no room for complacency, as grey squirrel detection is also up and still very high (60%). Management of grey populations therefore remains a vital task, if reds are to continue to thrive, which they surely would not be if grey management efforts were not at current levels.
